What is Fashion Philosophy?
Global fashion revenue is projected to have reached approximately $2.5 trillion in 2024.
There are many that love fashion! However, there are a great many that consider fashion to be 'frivolous" and less important than, for example, the medical, automotive, and financial industries. They live their lives in fashion. Yet, fashion's popularity masks it's underlying importance to humans.
Philosophy, proper, is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline. It is a methodological study of general and fundamental questions regarding topics like existence, reason, knowledge, ethics, value, mind, and language. Philosophy is a critical inquiry on methods used and formed assumptions.
The Philosophy of Fashion has emerged as an area of philosophical studies that explores ideas of how beings use fashion for individualistic expression. This includes how as 'beings in the world' we use fashion as a source of knowledge. Fashion will philosophically be viewed through the lens of cultural identity within societies over space and time.
In this podcast we will explore fashion philosophy through creatives working in the industry. We will also comment on current runway shows and events. Finally, we will explore thinkers on aesthetics such as Immanuel Kant, Roland Barthes, Georg Willhelm Hegel, Martin Heidegger, Umberto Eco, Thorstein Bunde Veblen and many more.
